Awesome Small Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas

Decorating the Christmas tree is one of my kids’ favorite holiday activities. We play Christmas music, have hot cocoa, and play carols to get us in the tree decorating mood. The kids’ always invited a friend or two to help with the decorating and provide a party type atmosphere.  Sounds like a Norman Rockwell moment, right? Not quite. Besides our tree in the Living Room, the kids had a smaller tree for their bedroom. They were allowed to decorate the tree with ornaments of their choosing. They loved having their own private tree, but… There’s always a but, isn’t there? I purchased different style trees. Big mistake.  They fought over who got the “favorite” tree. Since that time I’ve learned to never ever buy different trees.   If you are planning to use a small Christmas tree at your home,  here’s two awesome Small Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas.

Decorating Small Christmas Trees

Gingerbread Man Small Christmas Tree

I have been admiring Gingerbread Man Themed Kitchen Trees for a while, but I didn’t want to devote our main Christmas tree to the theme. Instead, I started with a set of Snowy Trees, three different sets of Gingerbread ornaments, 1 inch wide Christmas ribbon, and two spatulas from Critter’s mini baking set. I used the following ornament sets from Oriental Trading to complete the look: Peppermint Candy Gingerbread Man Christmas Ornaments, Gingerbread Characters with Cookie Christmas Ornaments, and Candy Cane Word Ornaments. Each package contained one dozen ornaments. I used six of each type on the tree for a total of 18 ornaments per tree. I was able to make two identical trees with my supplies. Of course, all the ornaments could be used on one tree, if you prefer, as I did for this picture.

Before I began decorating the tree, I fluffed the branches and wrapped the ribbon around the tree. Taking a tip from a pro decorator in an article in Southern Living, I started the ribbon from the top and worked my way down. Next, I placed the ornaments evenly on the tree. Finally, I used red curling ribbon to attach the two spatulas to the top of the tree. I didn’t add lights to my tree, but clear or red lights would be a nice touch.

Winter Themed  Small Christmas Tree

I wanted a tree I could use on my front porch. Although it would be sheltered, it would have to withstand some weather so I didn’t want to use traditional ornaments. Instead, I went with natural elements like silver glitter pine cones. I started with my Snowy Trees and wrapped a 1 inch silver ribbon around the tree. Once again taking a tip from Southern Living to make eye-popping Christmas trees, I added some silver floral picks before adding the silver glitter pine cones. I arranged all the natural elements to blend in with the tree, pushing them into the tree so they seemed to peek out. At the top of the tree, I added a Silver Glitter Star. The tree looked festive, but perfect for outdoors.

Once again, I didn’t add lights to my tree but clear lights would add a terrific accent to the tree.

I can see myself decorating all sorts of small tree this year! I even have plans for a sheep themed tree to represent our sheep farm. What about you? Do you have a favorite mini Christmas tree DIY project you do each year? What is your theme?
