Smart Shopping with June-Save Money On Meals When Traveling

With the high cost of restaurant meals, especially for large families, traveling can be daunting. Over the years we’ve learned a few tips and tricks to make our stays more economical.

We’re not the only ones who get hungry! Feeding the goats at Grant’s Farm.

1. Visit the local grocery store.
Whenever we are on vacation we drop in at the local store to pick up snacks, water, and beverages that we can eat during the day or in the evenings. This beats stopping by a fast food joint for a snack or using a vending machine.

2.Find a hotel chain that has free breakfast.
We often stay at chains that offer a free “hot breakfast.” Be wary on this one! Some chains offer a Continental breakfast that includes the bare basics-coffee and toast. We try to find one that offers fruit, cereal, muffins, yogurt, waffles and more. Not paying for breakfast is a great way to start the day.

3. Be sure to get a room that has a small fridge and microwave.
I use the mini fridge to store leftovers from dinner (the kids like to have the leftovers for breakfast),  sodas, water, and fruit. The microwave is essential for popping a quick bag of popcorn for snacking when the kids are watching television.

4. Pack a picnic lunch.
When we were frequent travelers, I would pack a picnic lunch and take it to a state or national park. Plenty of nature for the kids to explore! The kids thought we were having an adventure instead of saving money.

5. Eat Lunch instead of dinner.
We often each around 3:30 in the afternoon before the prices goes up for dinner. We can have a light snack and be full until morning.
