Smart Shopping with June-How to Save money on Fruit & Produce

One of my favorite ways to save money and ensure I have fresh fruits and veggies is to stop at Farmer’s Markets or Roadside Produce Stands whenever I travel. I can find a better selection of organic produce at low prices.  On a recent trip to the Farmer’s Market, I was able to score 14 assorted bell peppers for $2.90. At my area grocery stores Green bell peppers are 99 cents each while Red and Yellow Peppers are around $1.50 each.

Here’s some hints to keep the produce fresh on the way home (especially if you have a long way to travel):
Keep a cooler partially with ice and pack the fruits and veggies in the cooler to survive the heat and keep them fresh.  Always purchase the freshest fruits and veggies, not the slightly bruised items.

I have to share my absolute favorite Farmer’s Market-Soulard in St Louis.  The oldest farmer’s market west of the Mississippi, established in 1789, has an amazing variety of items.  They have everything from spices, flowers, herbs, fruits and veggies, and a selection of meat. I doubt I will ever be able to try the possum on a stick but I’ve had the alligator and the bison.  Check out their cheese stall for awesome deals. When I was there last week they had Feta Cheese on sale  2 packages for $1.00.  The same size container of  feta sells for $2.99 each at our area Walmart.

It’s worth the trip just to walk down the stalls and be whisked back in time. However, I do have a helpful money saving hint:  Check all the stalls before purchasing the items you want. Each vendor has different pricing so be sure to check for the cheapest price before you buy.
