If you saw my Sonic summer of Shakes posts recently, you know I was discussing their 25 delicious varieties of shakes that are half price every night after 8 PM. Yum! Some people told me, unfortunately, they didn’t have a Sonic in their area but they’d love to have one of the Sonic Shakes. Naturally that made me put on my thinking cap and go in search of a copycat recipe that can be made at home. I found Todd Wilbur’s copycat recipe and made a few minor changes. You can still experience all the goodness of their shakes at home!
I made the Sonic milkshake recipe and then added the additional ingredients needed to whip up six tasty variations. Tip: If the shakes seem a little runny when you prepare them, stick them in the freezer for ten to fifteen minutes and allow them to become firm. This basic shake can be changed to suit your taste with whatever ingredients sound good to you at the time. Experiment with adding candy, nuts, or different flavored ice cream toppings.
Printable Recipe
- 2 1/4 cups vanilla ice cream
- 1/2 whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- Peanut Butter Milkshake:
- add 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter to the above mixture.
- Peanut Butter Fudge
- add 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter and one tablespoon hot fudge
- Peanut Butter Banana
- add 2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter, one tablespoon hot fudge and one banana
- Strawberry:
- add 2 tablespoons Strawberry Syrup (like Hersheys)
- Chocolate:
- add 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
- Chocolate Covered Cherry:
- add 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup and 10 maraschino cherries
- Add the vanilla ice cream, milk vanilla and any other add ins. Process until smooth, about thirty seconds. Serve immediately.

love Sonic’s milkshakes, that is awesome that you can replicate them, yummy!
I worked at a Sonic for 3 years, at the fountain area, so I can say, you’re pretty spot-on. The only thing I would change with the recipes is that the real Sonic strawberry shake is made with (thawed) frozen strawberries in syrup. And the peanut butter was a super oily peanut butter to make it liquid enough to come through a pump lol. Thanks for sharing! I love copycat recipes 😉
Thanks for sharing such a wonderful information with regards to Sonic Copycat Vanilla Shake. I like sonic vanilla shake because these are easy to make. Can you post some more category of it.
I can’t believe it never occurred to me to add vanilla extract to a vanilla shake! I always just let the vanilla ice cream do it, but I LOVE vanilla, so I’ll be adding it from here forward. thanks for the idea.
Thanks for the recipe! I love these copycat recipes and have found that some of them taste much better than the ones that the fast food restaurants serve! I’m going to try and make this tomorrow, thank you.
You just made me mom and wife of the year with this one! Thank you for sharing this my hubby and daughter LOVE shakes and I had no idea home to make them!
Yummy! AND making them at home can be healthier if you use a healthier sweetener! For those interested in this, we interviewed Ellen Wood on our Sunday Blog Talk Radio show this week and she shared ways to sweeten foods … and how reducing her sugar intake has changed the course she was on towards Alzheimer’s.
It was a powerful interview: Is the Fountain of Youth in the Moderation of What We Eat?
Thanks for sharing a great recipe!!
That really look so rich and creamy, would love to make some.

The peanut butter banana sounds interesting flavor combination. I would drink it anyway as it’s a healthy milk shake.
I LOVE Sonic’s milkshakes, especially their strawberry shakes! The closest one to us is about half an hour away, though, so I’m definitely going to pin this and will be making one this week! 🙂

Ooh, I totally want one now! We just moved and I have no idea if we have a Sonic nearby so thanks for the recipes!
I try not to get shakes due to the calorie content but my husband gets them all the time.
Sonic has the 1/2 price shakes here but it is after 8 pm. I wish it was earlier.
Now he can make his own. thanks for sharing
ooh yummy esp as a after dinner treat 🙂
Oh my gosh!! You are killing me here!!! I can’t use sugar, but I bet I can replace some of the ingredients with things like Coconut milk sugar free ice cream, almond butter and I am going to have to check everything else. I bet mine won’t taste as good as yours but holy cow… now you have made me want one of these.
We love Sonic shakes in my house. We go to their happy hour at least once a week. Will have to try this and see. I don’t usually get vanilla since its so plain. I love flavored stuff. 🙂
