It’s July in the south and that means plenty of heat and humidity. I spend lots of time looking for ways to keep cool. We have a Sonic around a mile from our house and one day, when I was driving by, I saw a “Summer of Shakes” sign advertised, followed by a sign that said, “All shakes ½ price after 8 PM.” I couldn’t resist this offer and gathered up my family that very evening and went to grab a shake. They have 25 (yep, that’s not a typo!) varieties available. I settled for a Peanut Butter, while other family members chose Caramel or Oreo Fudge.
When I received a Sonic gift card to check out new menu items, I had no trouble persuading my family to go to Sonic for dinner. We arrived a few minutes after 8 PM and the place was hopping! I didn’t see a single empty space on the parking lot and the drive through was full. Fortunately, an empty spot became available quickly and we grabbed it. I had checked the sign as was drove into the drive-in and saw we had arrived on $1 Chili Cheese dog day. They are my favorite so my order was easy except when it came to the shakes. I wanted to try something different but had so many choices I couldn’t make up my mind. I finally settled on the Peanut Butter Fudge shake. Since we only had one child with us that night, I thought it would be easy for Bryan and my son to choose what they wanted, but no! A debate ensued on which type of shake would be the best. Finally a verdict was reached for a Coconut Crème Pie Shake and an Oreo Cheesecake shake.
While I am not a huge coconut fan, Bryan pronounced his shake, “Delicious, even better than my caramel shake!” Not wanting to miss a chance to test taste because I would be writing about it, of course, I took a sip and found it was very rich and had a strong coconut flavor, perfect for coconut lovers. The Oreo Cheesecake shake was good but had a touch of lemon flavor. Naturally, I thought my Peanut Butter Fudge was the best. Peanut Butter shakes are my favorite and I find that most of them either have very little peanut flavor or too much, so that it is overwhelming. I thought this one had a good blend of chocolate and peanut butter. I could taste both flavors and neither were overpowering to me. It was very rich though. I was only able to drink half of the shake before I set it in the freezer to save for later.
Have you tried any of the Summer of Shakes? Which ones have you tried?
YUMMM.. sure looks like a great dinner; wish we had one in our town. I have never been to a Sonic and we used to have two here, both closed 🙁 … if I ever make it into your neck of the woods you need to take me. Thanks for sharing, soooo want a Shake now
I have not but when I drink a shake it is usually oreo or chocolate! And I love ice cream… yes summer in the South can be so unbearable although this year it has seemed milder, at least where we live!
These shakes look absolutely delicious! Adding a shake to a burger meal is the best taste ever.
This sounds delicious. I have not ate at Sonic for about a year.
Wow! I love Sonic shakes, but didn’t realize they had 25! I love the chili cheese dogs and the tater tots with cheese! Yum
i use to love going to sonic all the time in high school! sadly i cant eat like that anymore :/
Yum I love their shakes and tater tots!
My hubby and I just split a large strawberry banana I be yesterday!! Deelish!!
I’m not a coconut fan either, but I am a little intrigued with that lemon in the OREO one. It sounds kinda yummy to me for some reason.
But if they had some kind of cheesecake one, that’s what I choose!
I wish there was a Sonic near me because that looks soooo gooood!
I love Sonic!!!Their shakes are AWESOME!!!
Their shakes are my favorite and I try and get one every time I go through town. There are so many I still need to try.
I love stopping into Sonic for a shake or cherry limeade!
I love Sonic, but I have not tried a summer shake. I need to make a trip!
My favorite is the Hot Fudge Shake. My fiance recently tried the Peanut & Bacon which I thought was weird…lol
Now that looks yummy, very bad but yummy – we don’t have this diner over here otherwise I would definitely be there 🙂 x
We were just at sonic yesterday, but for the slushies!! 🙂
No Sonics near me THANK HEAVENS—–or I would be there at least once a day until I tasted everyone of those 25 flavors!!
We live WAY out in the country so there is not Sonic close by. However, we have been known to load up and hit the after 8 special. My husband always gets chocolate but I try something different each time.
Looks yummy! Our Sonics closed down in my area. I’m hoping a new Franchisee will come in and bring them back. We have so much growth, that this type of restaurant shouldn’t have any trouble.
i haven’t done the shakes. i got distracted by kidz bop being offered at sonic. my kids would be SO excited!! i can get a shake and they can get toys. win win?!
