Classic Southern Buttermilk Pie Recipe

I’ve been on a classic pie kick lately, revisiting all of the old Southern favorites from my childhood. But, here’s the thing. This wasn’t always a favorite. I wasn’t a fan of buttermilk as a child and the name kept me from trying it. I didn’t realize until I took a bite, it did not taste like buttermilk. I had forgotten about this pie until Bryan and I visited a local diner. The special of the day included a slice of homemade pie, and having a natural sweet tooth, I opted to try it. “Is it good?” the waitress asked. “I’m afraid to try it because of the name.” If the name’s a problem, call it a custard pie instead of Buttermilk Pie. No one will know your secret.

Classic Southern Buttermilk Pie Recipe

This pie is so easy to make I whip it up anytime I need to take a dish to a get-together. If you use a regular 9” pie dish, you can easily make two pies with this recipe, or one deep dish pie. And, here’s another hint to help you save time: Use a purchased 9” inch pie shell. Prebake it and transfer the shell to one of these cute Good Cook pie dishes and no one will realize you didn’t bake it yourself. It will be our secret. You’re welcome. Plus, with two simple substitutions, you can make it a gluten free buttermilk pie.
