I was provided with a complementary meal at Straits All opinions are my own.
I am always up for trying new cuisine. If I can’t be adventurous and try new foods, why would I expect my kids to want too? I had never had Singaporean Cuisine before so, while staying at the Hotel Sorilla, I walked downstairs to their on-site restaurant, Straits Houston Singapore Restaurant & Lounge. We had made a reservation for 6:30 and although we arrived a few minutes early, offered to seat us right away with our choice of inside or outside seating. I glanced out at the covered tables and seating areas for only a second before saying, “Outside.”
The dinner menu, served daily from 4PM until 12 AM, offers a selection of beef, poultry, seafood and wok-fired main dishes as well as “small plates” (appetizers) and a raw bar. Having been out in the heat all day, I decided to skip the appetizer and go straight for the main course. (I did have an ulterior motive for this. I wanted to save room for the dessert menu.) I chose the Straits Butter Chicken, a savory blend of cilantro, tikki masala sauce, and toasted almonds served with chunks of tender chicken. My son chose the Crispy Salt and Pepper Fried Chicken, a half chicken, deep fried and served with a side salad and spicy jalapeno cilantro sauce. We decided to split a medium bowl of coconut rice, which was easily big enough for two people. The rice was cooked in coconut milk and slightly sweeter than traditional rice. I mixed some with my Butter Chicken, while my son ate some with his spicy jalapeno cilantro sauce, which he is still raving about. “That sauce was so good! I wonder how they made it!”
While we were eating we were greeted by one of the managers, Ken, who stopped by our table to check on our dining experience. I saw him chatting briefly with other diners as well and appreciated the personal touch.
My son and I decided to split a dessert and now I wish we had not. After some debate we decided on the Chocolate Lava Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream and Thai tea caramel. Our server told us it was prepared in house so we would have a twelve to fifteen minute wait and asked if that was okay. I was so impressed they made their desserts in house that I told him, “Of course we will wait.” It was so worth it. I could have eaten the entire dessert myself! The cake was moist with a rich, gooey center that flowed onto our plate. When paired with the ice cream, it was a decadent treat. And, as a good mom, I let my son have the last bite even though I could have eaten it!
Straits was a winner of the Opentable.com’s 2013 Diner’s Choice Awards and features wines, cocktails and two house sodas, Ginger and LemonGrass Mint. Looks like way too much food for a restaurant in New York City.
Never have been to that restaurant but it sounds like good food–I really like that the outside dinig comes with tents over the tables! As for that dessert—–your son would not have been so lucky had I been there–he would have had to order his own!!
