During our trip to Houston last week we took time out to watch a movie. “So what?” You say, “Anyone can go to the theater.” That’s true, but this theater, the Studio Movie and Grill, was unlike any theater I had visited before. We had planned to see Despicable Me 2 but all the shows were sold out. That’s because I didn’t research and discover I could have purchased tickets and made reservations online for the movie time we wanted to see.

When we arrived for our 9 PM showing of the Lone Ranger, we were asked to choose the seats we wanted. Seating is available in three forms, table seating that seats parties of two at one table, counter seating, providing one continuous table surface, and VIP seats, which are fixed and include a built-in tray table for each chair and a larger seating area. We chose table seating and were handed a menu before we entered the theater. When we were seated, more people began to arrive and my son muttered, “Great! Now we won’t be able to see!” I was afraid of same problem, but was relieved to find the theater was designed to allow a good viewing experience no matter where we were.

The term “Movie and a Show” take on a totally new meaning at the Studio Movie Grill. Patrons could relax in the bar before the show for a cocktail or soft drink. Once seated in the theater, we were able to push a buzzer, located on our table, and a server would quickly make his way over, take the order and deliver it directly to us. The server was very discreet and efficient too. What could have been a disturbing experience for other patrons was barely noticeable. I didn’t have any food at the Studio Movie Grill, having eaten dinner an hour earlier, but everyone around me did and I was impressed with how it didn’t cause distractions.

Did I mention that the Houston Studio Movie Grill has free parking? Or, if you are staying in the Hotel Sorella, it’s a short walk of about thirty feet from the third floor exit of the hotel to the theater. Here’s a couple of facts I wish I had known before visiting:

  • Movie listings and show times for all SMG locations are posted each Tuesday for the upcoming week.
  • Advance Ticketing is available for some films and can be purchased online or in the theater up to several weeks in advance.

Not in Houston? SMG also has locations in Arizona, Georgia (yay!), Illinois, North Carolina and other parts of Texas. If you are looking for a date night or family evening, check out Studio Movie Grill.

  20. We have a Studio Movie Grill near us and I took my son there for his first “big movie”. We saw Pound Puppies. It was really nice and he had a great time. He was in awe and it was really cute. We left a little early because he was only 2 years old, but he talked about how fun it was for weeks after!
