Special Days call for smooth skin.

“Mom, I have a nasty rash!” These are words I have heard from my daughter since she was in elementary school. I took her to doctors and dermatologists who told me, “It’s eczema.” They prescribed various pills, ointments and creams, which helped to a degree. When she was diagnosed with Celiac disease, we began carefully reading labels to eliminate wheat from her diet, but one thing I didn’t realize was how many everyday items, cosmetics, Anti-perspirant and more, contained gluten as a binding agent. When her rash continued, a doctor told us, “Have you considered this rash might be caused by gluten? You need to look for products with natural ingredients and no gluten.” I couldn’t believe no one had suggested she use all natural personal care products before. We had never suspected gluten would be included in these products!

Look for the Gluten Free label!

When shopping at Whole Foods, I decided to browse the natural care aisle. Passing by the Tom’s of Maine display, I noticed the Tom’s deodorant had a label under each product proclaiming they were gluten free. I snatched one up, purchased it and brought it home. While I can’t promise this would work for everyone, when my daughter began using the gluten free products on her skin, her rash disappeared! She was thrilled because having itchy, scaly skin is not something a teenager appreciates.

Tom’s of Maine is available at Whole Foods.

Her doctor explained why he thought this worked on her. “Many people forget and touch their mouth or nose after using a product containing gluten, causing it to be ingested.” Her bad habits of twisting her hair around her fingers and nail biting were allowing her to consume gluten even when we had cut it out of her diet!
