Family Fun: Make a Sundae and Milkshake Bar

This summer has been a whirlwind of entertaining on my new patio.  For the first time in years we are able to step out on the porch without rushing back inside from possible heat stroke after approximately two minutes. One activity my kids always enjoyed was flagging down the ice cream truck who came through our neighborhood. The last time they and a group of friends stopped the truck, I almost choked when the driver said ice cream bars were $5.00 each! I asked if he had anything cheaper and found he had a plain popsicle for $1 each.  After this experience, I decided why wait for the truck? I could create my own ice cream bar much cheaper. An added bonus would be everyone could have what they wanted!  I stopped by Walgreens and picked up  a package of  Breyer’s vanilla ice cream, a package of Breyer’s Oreo Ice Cream and a box of Magnum ice cream bars.  Using a potting bench I had recently purchased, I made a milkshake and Sundae bar.

On the top shelf I placed various add-ins including candies, cookies, graham crackers and an assortment of toppings.  I brought out the blender, milk, an ice cream scoop, dishes, spoons and napkins.  After we finished dinner, I placed the ice cream in an ice filled basket-to keep it from melting quickly in the heat- and let the kids create their own concoctions.  They were thrilled to have such a cool DIY project and had a hard time deciding what they wanted to create.  Sundaes? Milkshakes? Ice Cream Bars? A small amount of all of it?

The kids weren’t the only ones to get into it. I invited my in-laws and my dad and all three of them asked for sundaes! Even though the kids are older now, it was fun seeing how excited they became when they got to create with ice cream!

Even better, my daughter, who has celiac, was able to participate too!

This was a fun, inexpensive way to make an ordinary summer evening extraordinary and a whole lot cheaper than purchasing $5 ice cream bars! Walgreens has a great selection of Unilever Ice Cream products including Magnum, Breyers, Klondike, Fruttare and  Popsicle to make any ice cream party better.

Do you have any ideas on how to make an ice cream night special? What do you do when you want to make an #icecreamrun?

Today’s conversation has been sponsored by Global Influence, but all opinions are my own.
