Taqueria Las Comadres : Authentic Mexican Food

While we were in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, we had the opportunity to try Taqueria Las Comadres, using a Restaurant.com Gift Certificate, in the nearby town of Murrells Inlet. As my husband is a Spanish-English interpreter at the hospital in our town, we have a lot of ties to the local Latino community. Because of that, we eat at a lot of taquerias. I consider myself to be a bit of a taco connoisseur and Mexican dishes. While browsing the Taqueria Las Comadres reviews online, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they offered pupusas. Pupusas, a traditional Salvadorean dish consisting of a thick corn tortilla stuffed with cheese and other fillings, are hard to find around our house. Since they were on the menu, I knew what I was going to order.

Taqueria Las Comadres is easy to spot from the road. It’s a bright little building in a parking lot. While the small kitchen is enclosed and there is a little patio with a few seats under the roof, most of the seating consists of picnic tables directly beside the building. If it’s raining, like it was when we arrived, grab a seat on the small patio or take your food to go.  The menu at Taqueria Las Comadres is small and to the point. Tacos, sopes, gorditas, burritos, quesadillas, and pupusas are offered with your choice of meat. There are common options, like barbacoa and carne asada, and less common options, like lengua (tongue) and tripa (tripe). You can also buy soft drinks, horchata, or agua de pina (a pineapple-based sweetened juice drink.) The only side item is nopales y cebollas asadas, which is grilled onions and cactus.

Between the four of us, we ordered a burrito with barbacoa, a burrito with carne asada, cheese pupusas, pork and cheese pupusas, two pineapple waters, a Mexican Coca-Cola, and a Diet Coke. The burritos were huge, and came with rice and beans along with the choice of meat. The pupusas were served with curtido, a vinegar slaw traditionally eaten with pupusas. We were offered our choice of salsas as well, including a spicy habanero salsa, which I tried. The agua de pina was delicious, just slightly sweetened and not watered down like some agua frescas can be.

While we were waiting, we could see our pupusas being handmade through the window where we placed our order. Some restaurants serve pre-made frozen pupusas, so it was really nice to see that these were going to be homemade. If you order tacos here, the corn tortillas are also made to order. This does mean that it takes some extra time to get your food, but the process is worth the finished product. After all, a good tortilla can really make or break a meal!

If we’re ever back in Myrtle Beach, we will definitely be back at Taqueria Las Comadres. You can easily get a meal for under $10 a person, and if you’re craving tacos, this is the real deal.
