My family received complimentary tickets to the World of Coca-Cola All opinions expressed are my own. Any additional expenses incurred were my own.
When I was homeschooled and my dad worked as a district manager, we traveled a lot as a family. Although I didn’t appreciate all of my experiences at the time, there was one thing I was always excited to see. That was the World of Coca-Cola, in Atlanta, Georgia. Near the end of his district manager days with that company, we heard that the World of Coca-Cola was going to be moved into a brand new, even better building. That was years ago, but I never found the time to make the two hour drive to see the new one.
When I found out the World of Coca-Cola was one of our stops on the Wyndham Weekends trip, I was beyond excited. I kept telling my husband how cool the old World of Coca-Cola had been, and my mom kept telling me that the new one was even better. When we arrived on a Saturday afternoon, there was a two hour wait. Since we didn’t have much time that day, we checked out some other area attractions and vowed to come back before opening time the next day.
When we arrived on Sunday morning, there was a short wait, which died down by 11 am- at which point we were already in the World of Coca-Cola, exploring. In fact, we made it inside with the first group! After a brief history of the Coca-Cola brand in a room covered in cool Coke memorabilia and a short film, we were let loose for a self-guided tour of the rest of the museum. Of course, everyone lined up to see the Vault the Coca-Cola secret formula is kept in. However, my mom and I knew the real reason we were at the museum, and headed upstairs for a visit to the Taste It! Room.
The Taste It! Room allows you to try flavors of Coca-Cola from all over the world, including some regional US favorites like Cherry Fanta. While my mom savored the Cherry Fanta, which has been increasingly hard to come by in our area, Justin and I took on the quest of trying every single flavor available. We found some new favorites, like a citrus drink available in Bahrain. We also found some flavors that were strange to us, like a mint drink that tasted a bit like Listerine. Mom and I tricked Justin into trying the flavor “Beverly,” from Italy, which is a very bitter drink. Watching the facial expressions of patrons trying “Beverly” is enough to make the Taste It! Room worth it.
After we had made ourselves sick on soda, we headed on over to the 4D theatre. The 4D theatre has a short film, and gets you into the action using moving seats, blasts of air, and squirts of water. If you don’t think you can handle the moving seats, there are nonmoving seats and wheelchair seating available in the back row. The film at the time we went was about two scientists searching for the secret to Coca-Cola’s secret formula. It was funny, family-friendly, and features enough Coca-Cola imagery to send you back to the Taste It! Room for another round.
On the bottom floor, we visited the bottling works, which allows you to see the bottling process of a Coca-Cola. There are plaques throughout the exhibit telling you about different machines and walking you through the bottling process. Also on the bottom floor is the history of Coca-Cola, also known as “Milestones of Refreshment.” Here, we got to see Olympic torches, Coca-Cola ads from the past, and find out how Coca-Cola got its name. Many exhibits are interactive, and you can try your hand at writing out the famous Coca-Cola logo. The famous Coca-Cola polar bear hangs out in the main lobby outside the Vault, Bottle Works, and Milestones of Refreshment. As we passed by, he was posing with a group of kids, but adults are also welcome to take photos with him.
After our jaunt downstairs, it was time for us to head back upstairs to visit the Pop Culture Gallery. Here, you can see how Coca-Cola was featured in famous moments in Pop Culture, including a wall of Coke Folk Art from the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The Pop Culture Gallery is also interactive, allowing you to design your own Coca-Cola bottles in various styles. Once you’re done making your art, you can email it to yourself to share on various social media sites.
When we finished up in the Pop Culture Gallery, we took one last jaunt through the Taste It! Room before grabbing our complimentary glass bottle Coca-Cola and heading out. As you leave, you exit through the Coca-Cola store, allowing you to buy any memorabilia your heart desires. I eyed a few Coca-Cola tee products, but decided against buying anything as we had to walk back to our car.
If you’re visiting the World of Coca-Cola and intend to check out anything else in Centennial Park afterwards, there is a parking garage directly across from the World of Coca-Cola, where parking is only $10.
I haven’t been to this place before. Here in India Coke has bought the local “Thumbs Up” brand.
