Tennis, anyone?

Have you ever known an entire family with no athletic ability? Usually there’s at least one person in the family that has some prowess, but in our case, there is no exceptions. As a child I was uncoordinated. I was always the last one picked for any games of kickball or any other sport in elementary school. By the time I began attending college, I had given up. My college PE instructor, who, to his dismay, had to teach me for Tennis I & II, Racquetball I & II, Archery and First Aid, spend most of his time giggling in a corner over my lack of skill. Not even the purchase of a top notch tennis racket or archery set could help me.

Looking Good! There’s hope for us yet!

My daughter followed in my footsteps. Able to trip over her own feet, she spent years breaking limbs when playing sports or even playing on the playground. I knew we were in trouble when, at two years of age, she fell off of the merry go round and chipped a tooth. Broken bones and black eyes followed from skateboard injuries, karate injuries or dodge ball injuries.

Still going strong!

In high school she discovered tennis. She dug out my racket, purchased a set of tennis balls and began spending hours on the courts with her friends. I waited anxiously for the usual scrapes, bruises and broken bones. Instead, she came home, dropping tennis terms left and right and telling me how much she enjoyed the game. Wow! I thought. She’s finally succeeding at a sport and enjoying it! My mind whirled at the possibilities. Tennis scholarships? Future Olympic athlete? Sure, I was getting a little ahead of myself, but I was amazed that my daughter had finally found a sport and was succeeding.

And my hopes are dashed.

Then, I happened to find a picture of my daughter’s best friend and tennis buddy. She’s looking frantically around for the ball. I don’t know how long it took her to discover the ball was stuck in her racket. All I can say is, thank goodness for academic scholarships!

  1. Lol…It would be such an ugly site if you were to see my “skills”

  2. That’s hilarious! That totally sounds like me. The only sport I had any hope for was sprinting because I was awesome at it as a kid.. and then I got asthma. Not a good combination.

  3. THAT is hilarious! Both the story and the ending photo! 🙂 nice!!

  4. I can totally relate! Your post had me laughing out loud, for sure!

Was always tripping over my long with most sports until I discovered long-distance running- no sports scholarships here, though, either.

  5. I play with my kids but not that great at it. I think I run more looking for the ball then any thing else. lol

  6. I can’t say that I’ve ever tried tennis. I also liked sports but I seemed to go for the individual sports like running/boxing. The pic with the ball stuck in the racket is pretty funny!

  7. Ha! That is hilarious!

I was much better at individual sports than team sports.

  8. Opps You would think she would have felt the ball touch her racket. Makes for a funny picture anyway.

  9. Thanks for the laugh- love the pics. :p I was never really good at any sports except for running and I have a feeling my 7 year old is following in my footsteps.

  10. Oh that is so funny! I love the photos at night and glad they were having fun.

  11. My kids both play tennis, as does my husband. I, however, am HORRIBLE at it despite lessons in highschool!
