The Ill-Fated Family Photo

Photos can preserve priceless moments in life; the birth of a child, weddings, special events. They also make great gifts for the person who has everything. Last Christmas I gave my in-laws, who are notoriously difficult to buy for, a canvas print of all of their grandchildren. Since the last photo they had of all the only contained four kids and the “new” fifth addition was eight years old, they were happy to have an updated version.

The Photo I Tried so Hard to Snap

The photo turned out to be a daunting task to pull off. Trying to coordinate the schedule of four active teenagers and one eight year old was seemingly impossible. After several weeks, I managed to find a day and a time convenient to everyone. I called my niece and told her, “6 PM! You all need to be ready to make the picture then!” “We’ll be ready,” she assured me. When I pulled up in the driveway I knew it would be a long evening. “Aunt Pam!” she yelled, from astride her favorite horse, “What are you doing her at 6 PM? I’m not ready! I have to curl my hair and put on makeup!” With those words, she jumped down from her horse and disappeared into the house, followed closely by my daughter. My other niece appeared, only to inform me she had gotten the shirt dirty that she had planned to wear. Could we put this off until another day?

Possible candidate for the Photo Calendar?

Finally, after much coercing, the kids were rounded up and posed by a hay bale. The shot seemed possible. We were ready. Or so I thought. The kids began arguing about where to stand. “You stand over here!” “No you!” “How come he gets to stand there?” “What do you mean stand over here?” The arguments continued until darkness began to fall. “Just stand there!” I snapped. “I have to get this picture before dark!” I finally managed to snap a few pictures to submit for the photo before completely surrounded by darkness. My canvas order was ready to be placed. That’s when I got the note from the publisher, “These photos are too dark. Do you have any lighter ones you could send?” Arrgh! I would have to go through all this again.

The canvas was eventually completed and delivered, still a little on the dark side. Maybe this year I’ll make the kids pose for pictures to make a photo calendar. That would give them something to complain about, twelve photos, instead of just one.

  3. It is sooooo hard to get that one photo that works! My kids love to throw a last minute face in there and ruin the shot. At least you have the goofy memories!

  5. When I was gettting married, I wanted a photo of the entire wedding party with all the guests that attended taken on the long staircase of the chapel. Our professional photographer took 2 shots and when they were developed – both were too blurry to even use.

  6. I can’t remember the last time I was able to get the kids in one place for an updated picture.

  7. One of my favorite family photos is from 2006 or so, my daughter has the weirdest look on her face but that is what makes it so fun!

  8. LOL I hear you on how difficult it can be to get 5 kids together for a photo. Even at holiday functions, we can’t seem to get everyone together for a photo!
