The holidays are just around the corner. At our house we always try to watch a few holiday specials and classic videos to help us get into the spirit of the season. We each have a favorite– my daughter watched the Rudolph so much Bryan finally told her that Christmas movies could only be watched in November and December. One yearly tradition we adhere to is finding one new movie or video to watch. I’ve found some movies for kids that have just been released and am sharing them with you in case you’d like to try our traditions or just need to keep the kids occupied for a few minutes to wrap some presents.
My Little Pony-A Very Minty Christmas–Who doesn’t remember these cute little ponies? First released in 2005, this classic movie was released again on October 8th. It tells the story of Minty’s adventures to save Christmas when she accidentally breaks the Here Comes Christmas Candy Cane, the signal that shows Santa Claus the way to Ponyville. Determined to make it right, she starts on a perilous journey to the North Pole. Her friends rally to cheer her up and everyone learns Christmas is not just about getting gifts. Special features include the That’s What I love about Christmas Sing Along and my personal favorite, Nothing Says Christmas Like a pair of socks sing-a-long. Developed for ages three through eight, this movie will be enjoyed by everyone.
Bonus Idea–make some minty hot chocolate to enjoy while watching the movie. Whip up your favorite hot cocoa (from scratch or use an instant mix), add some marshmallows and a peppermint stick.
Pound Puppies: Holiday Hijinks–Another blast from the past! The Pound Puppies gang–Lucky, Niblet, Cookie, Strudel, Squirt and Mr. Nut-Nut–will be arriving on DVD November 5th with five classic Holiday episodes including I Heard the Barks on Christmas Eve, I Never Barked for My Father, Barlow, Good Dog, McLeish and Prince and the Pupper. The pups try to ensure that every pet will have a happy home this holiday season, but will they succeed? These videos include the voice talents of one of my favorite actresses, Betty White.
Bonus Idea–make grilled cheese pups. Cut out slices of bread with a dog shaped cookie cutter. Top with cheese and broil until cheese is melted. Add raisins for nose and eyes, and a line of mustard for a mouth.
Transformers Rescue Bots–Griffin Rock Rescue— while not technically a Holiday movie, this DVD with a release date of October 22nd, is sure to please the action adventure guys in the household. Five episodes are included on this DVD: The Other Doctor, The Reign of Morocco, Small Blessings, The Griffin Rock Triangle and Rules and Regulations. There’s plenty of fun as the Rescue Bots work to keep their town safe while experiencing obstacles, like accidentally shrinking themselves, which is never a good thing!
Bonus Idea: Serve the kids Transformer Punch– mix half blue koolaid with sprite and serve in small, clear glasses. Make gelatin jigglers in red, green, orange and blue. You can also serve a mixture of fruits in Transformer colors–oranges, blueberries, strawberries, and kiwi.

I know my Grandkids would like all of these… but I think I would pick A Very Minty Christmas or possibly the Pound Puppies. I am not so into the robots and if I have to watch with them… I would like to at least have a little pick.
