Why Parents Will Love WebSafety

The internet is a beautiful thing. Through it I have developed friendships with people from around the world, found information in seconds that used to take hours of research and found hundreds of opportunities I would have never imagined in my “B.C.” (before computer) life.  Like all good things, the internet also has a dark side.  There are scary reports of things I never had to deal with as a child; cyberbullying, predators and overuse of social media.  We’re told to talk to our kids about the dangers of the internet on a regular basis, but sometimes it doesn’t have a lot of effect. I know I used to catch my daughter trying to Facebook message her friends long after it was time for lights out and used to catch my son playing an online game when he was supposed to be doing homework.  I used to think, “There has to be a better solution to online safety than using my stealthy parenting skills!” I’ve finally found one and am partnering with them to share the news with you: WebSafety.

I recently met with the founder of WebSafety and a member of their research and development team where I got a look at WebSafety in action.  This easily downloadable app, designed for android devices and tablets, allows parents to be able to see, in real time, what their children are doing on the internet.  My favorite feature, which would have been perfect for my daughter, is the curfew setting.  As a chatty child, she loved to text her friends long after she was supposed to be asleep. I confiscated her phone on school nights, but this would have been so much easier!  How cool is this?
features

“Parents can establish time restrictions when the child can use their mobile devices. The child may only use the device during restricted times to make phone calls. All other activities will be blocked. If the child attempts to break the curfew, the parent will be notified immediately.”

Other features include being able to monitor inappropriate websites,  social media messages, what pictures are uploaded and to where, what apps are installed and  the ability to track the past and present location of the child’s device.   Right now WebSafety is having a special; monthly subscribers will get the first six months 50% off and yearly subscribers will get the first year 50% off.

What tips do you have for protecting your child online?

  1. After reading this article how can I not get this ASAP. Online is where most of the world is receiving information. It is wise to monitor our children at all times!!!

  2. I think constant vigilance and monitoring are key in keeping your kids safe online. I watch everything my sons do online.

  3. Every parent needs this! There are so many ways to get around being monitored and kids are figuring them out. It’s hard to monitor what your kids are doing on their computer and phones.

  4. With anyone web safety is important – at any age. With kids being so tuned in its best to start them at a young age with the dangerous of the internet and do all we can to protect them.

  5. A very important thing to consider and chat with with your kids! It’s a good idea to have the computer in a central room like Rosey said!

  6. With kids having some safety on the web is important!

  7. I keep the computer in the dining room, a central area of the house where we usually congregate. My teen and I both have her Facebook password, that was the stipulation of her being able to open it when she got old enough. That being said, taking a stronger approach might not be a terrible idea.

  8. I think parents do know as well what happens on the internet – and after all, so many news about abuse is roaming around so – its security is quite of importance as well.

  9. I love this! My son is online a lot between school and fun – I would love to have this!

  10. This is a great service and if I had kids of the age where this was needed, I would be using it. It is great that parents of tweens and teens have this resource to help them keep their children internet safe and to give them peace of mind.

  11. That is awesome! I don’t have kids yet, but I am already thinking of web safety when the time comes.

  12. Anything to keep kids as safe as we possibly can. It is so scary online!

  13. Even as an adult I see cyber bullying everyday under other site owner’s posts. You would think people would be kind in this world, but no..sad! At least this program will keep young people safer.

  14. It is scary how unsafe of a place the internet can be and the fact we all let it into our lives so easily. x

  15. This is a great idea. I can’t even imagine being the parent of young kids in this internet age. It was so much easier years ago when my kids were little.

  16. I monitor my children as they are surfing the web, we have blocks, and I also monitor their history.

  17. This will come in handy once we allow the kids to use the computer. The only internet access our oldest, who is 9, has is it school right now. We do not have a “family” computer quite yet.

  18. Thanks for sharing this information. I have teenagers so web safety is a serious priority in my house!

  19. There are so many things to watch out for when it comes to the internet and kids. I personally thing this is a fantastic idea.

  20. Wow, there are so many facets to this, I love it! Safety is important everywhere these days, for sure!

  21. My kids arent at that age yet where I have to be worried about their online activities. However, I would definitely not think twice and get this when it’s time. I firmly believe that as parents we have a responsibility to know what our kids are doing online so we can guide them in making good decisions and teach them responsible internet behavior.

  22. My kids aren’t allowed to use the computer yet, but this is going to come in very handy in a few years.
