The Best Southern Pound Cake Recipe

Do you have a favorite recipe from your childhood? This pound cake recipe was one of mine. My mom rarely made sweets so it was always a treat when she did. She would bake this cake, which I thought was the best Southern Pound Cake recipe ever, and place it on the stove to cool. I’d sneak into the kitchen when she went into another room and break off pieces of the crust. When my mom asked what happened to them, I would exclaim, in a voice of total innocence, “I bet they just fell off into the pan by accident.” She never bought that story, especially since I usually still had crumbs around my mouth. When I rediscovered the recipe recently, I made it for my family to see if it was still as good as I remembered. It was. “Why haven’t you made this before?” the men in the family asked, “It’s so good.” This proves my theory that sometimes classic recipes are the best!

The Best Southern Pound Cake Recipe

Truthfully, one of the reasons I hadn’t made this pound cake in years was because it’s fattening. It’s one of those special occasion treats, reserved for birthdays, church dinners, or potlucks. Whenever my mom took this to a family reunion or other celebration she always brought home an empty cake dish, so maybe if you want a piece for yourself sneak one before you go. This is a recipe that’s worth the slight fuss and bother of making it.

The creamed butter, sugar, and shortening mixture should look like this.

Here’s what you need

1/2 cup shortening
2 sticks butter, softened
3 cups granulated sugar
5 eggs
1 cup whole milk
3 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
1 teaspoon almond flavoring

Here’s how to make it

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
1. In a large bowl, mix the shortening, butter, and sugar until the mixture is creamy.
2. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing after each addition.
3. Alternately add flour and milk, stirring after each addition.
4. Add vanilla and almond flavorings. Stir.
5. Pour the mixture into a greased and floured tube OR bundt pan.
6. Bake for an hour and 15 minutes.
7. Allow the cake to cool completely before removing from the pan.

Batter Should Look Like This.

Cooking Tips:

*Be sure to preheat the oven. This will help ensure even baking.
*Grease and flour the pan before adding the batter. This will help keep the cake from sticking.
*Allow the cake to cool completely before removing from the pan. This will help keep the cake from falling apart.
*If the cake does fall apart from being removed from the pan too soon, cut it into cubes and use it in parfaits or trifles.
*You can adjust the amount of flavoring as well. Sometimes I add 1 1/2 teaspoons or substitute lemon flavoring for the almond.
